Are You an Easy Lover?

Post 543

It just occurred to me that if you don’t get the reference, this question might sound a bit, erm, ‘fruity’. Promiscuous. Forward. I’ll stick with ‘fruity’. Because no one really uses that word anymore. Well, oporopolists might. That’s someone that sells fruit. You could consider them rather fruity. In fact, the ‘Easy Lover’ in this question is actually a song, something that some of you of a certain age will not be aware of. 30 years ago it came out. A duet between Philip Bailey and Phil Collins. And like with everything Phil Collins has ever done, it’s really not very good…

‘Easy Lover’ doesn’t mean what you probably think it means. It actually means that the girl in question is too easy to love. ‘She’ll get a hold on you. Like no other. She’ll take your heart but you won’t feel it. The kind of girl you dream of. You’d better forget it. She will play around and leave you. Leave you and deceive you. Better forget it. Oh, you’ll regret it. You’ll never change her. For she’ll say there’s no other. ‘Til she finds another.’

She sounds like a right bastard, doesn’t she?

Basically, this girl is a master of emotional manipulation. So smooth it’s impossible not to be charmed by her. But she has no intention of staying with you forever. She’ll move on to get her next fix. A girl that doesn’t want to be pinned down. You’ll never be the one to keep a hold of her. The one to make her stop. It’s all an illusion of emotional wreckage. She’ll never be satisfied, constantly fidgeting her way from one heart to the next. It’s a powerful subject for such an incredibly cheesy song.

It needn’t be said that the vast majority of people who like this song have next to no clue as to its meaning. It’s that thing you know one line of, usually the first line of the chorus. That song that has a funky beat that you like to dance along to, all the while completely unaware of what you’re actually listening to. In fact, these people almost certainly think ‘easy lover’ means the girl in question is promiscuous, not knowing what it really means.

So, am I like the girl in this song? No. But am I ‘easy’? Which is, obviously, what most people think the song means.

Well, that’s for me to know and you to find out…
