Does the Agogwe Exist?

Post 555

The Agogwe. A mythical creature from Africa. Although first recorded in 1900 by Captain William Hichens, he didn’t report it until 1937. ‘I saw two small, brown furry creatures,’ he wrote. ‘They were little men, about four feet high, walking upright, but clad in russet hair. The native hunter with me… they were, he said, Agogwe.’ Welcome, readers, to the world of this mysterious animal…

These creatures look like tiny humans and are said to live in the forests of Eastern Africa. They are between three and five feet tall, covered in black or grey hair, with yellow-red skin. They walk upright like humans, all the time, unlike any other ape. What else differentiates this cryptid from all other known apes also includes a rounded forehead, long arms, small and sharp canines and the unusual colour of its hair and skin.

Many did not believe Captain Hichens, who was ridiculed and criticised for what he reported in 1937. But a man named Cuthbert Burgoyne spoke out in support of the Captain and said that he too saw two similar creatures in 1927 whilst on an expedition off the coast of Eastern Africa, walking on the beach among apes, like a natural part of the landscape. Burgoyne described the creatures as, ‘Probably between four and five feet tall, quite upright and graceful in figure.’

Professional animal collector Charles Cordier is said to have captured one in the 1950s or 1960s. ‘It fell on its face, turned over, sat up, took the noose off its feet and walked away.’ I love that. I just love how easily the creature escaped. I also love the fact it didn’t run away scared. It just casually walked away. Like it was a mild inconvenience. Suggests intelligence, doesn’t it? Or that Cordier was a crap hunter…

The leading theory is that the creature closely resembles ‘gracile australopithecine’, a bipedal primate living around three million years ago. The animal is almost identical to the descriptions of the Agogwe, therefore it could be a descendant.

Considering the creature is said to live in the remote forest regions of Africa, it is somewhat likely it could exist. Those regions are barely explored and no formal expeditions have been launched to find the Agogwe. Plus, many locals have claimed to have seen it or have heard stories of its existence. A legend, perhaps, of Eastern Africa.

So, using my patented ‘Cryptid-o-Meter’, a genuine thing I’ve spent far too much time working on, a mathematically accurate scale of one to a hundred of how likely the existence of individual cryptids is, one being incredibly unlikely and 100 being incredibly likely, I’ll give the Agogwe a 70.

If you’re keeping record, readers, this puts the Agogwe top of my Cryptid List. The Loch Ness Monster is second. Because I’ve only done two of these cryptid questions. But it’s a start.

Small steps, small steps…
